Somekawa received the prize of excellence in the postage stamp
design contest of Japan in 1998.
The subject of the contest was the "50th Anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights". Stamps came into circulation in December 1998.

"I used the chinese character 人.
This chinese character means "human being".
I made many works using this character" he says.

The Human Series of 1998
After being awarded in the stamp design contest, Somekawa created a whole series based on the "human being" character 人.

Concept of the work with 人
"The world is currently in chaos. War, famine, fraud, murder, etc.
Where does humanity go? Destruction? Is there no salvation?
Do we pray to God?
Or we humans solve these problems ourselves? Do we have a purpose?
My work represents people in chaos, and I expressed how humanity
could be rescued.
Is salvation in our hands or in the hands of God? I do not know about that.
But if we are not willing to solve the problem ourselves,
we cannot receive God's grace.
I do believe it" says Somekawa.
The new Human Series of 2022
In 2022, the artist started a new "Human Series", based on the 1998s series but yet completely different.

He also uses this 人 character in his sculptures.
